Acute appendicitis in the aged

Abstract
Acute appendicitis-is a common disease in general but rare in the elderly. But, in most of the institution acute appendicitis of the elderly seems to be increasing in its incidence probably due to the increased mean life. Because of diagnostic difficulties, many combined disease and poor physiologic reservoir, still the appendicitis of the elderly causes many kinds of complica-tions and mortality compared to that of the younger.
This report deals with 89 cases of acute appendicitis over the age of sixty, which were con-firmed by operation and tissue pathology during last 10 years from Jan. 1966 to Dec. 1975. Among these 89 patients 39 cases were male, and 40 cases showed perforation at the time of operation. The choice of operative treatment was simple appendectomy in simple appendicitis and appendec-tomy with peritoneal drainage in perforated one. In our series, the prognosis was depended upon the presence or absence of perforation and general condition of the patients.
